What does each pride flag mean?

Inclusivity Flag

This is a new design of the typical rainbow pride flag to be more inclusive of transgender individuals and people of color. Daniel Quasar released this design in 2018. It was completely accepted by the LGBTQ+ community immediately.

Colors from top to bottom represent life, healing, sun, nature, harmony, and spirit. The arrow represents progress towards full equality for all marginalized groups.

 

Lesbian Flag

A term that defines non-male people who are attracted to females. The current version is the “Sunset Flag.” Colors from top to bottom represent gender nonconformity, independence, community, uniqueness of womanhood, serenity/peace, love/sex, and femininity.

Gay Flag

A term that defines non-female people who are attracted to males. Colors from top to bottom represent community, healing, joy, non-traditional men, pure love, fortitude, and diversity

Bisexual Flag

A term that defines someone with an attraction to 2+ genders with preferences. Michael Page created the flag in 1998. Colors represent attraction to the same gender (pink), attraction to different genders (blue), and purple is the overlap.

Transgender Flag

Represents people who do not identify with their gender assigned at birth. Was created by an American trans woman named Monica Helms in 1999. Colors represent masculinity (blue), femininity (pink), and everything in between (white).

Nonbinary Flag

Represents people who do not identify with the terms male or female. Was created by Kyle Rowan in 2014 to be flown along with other pride flags. Colors represent different people who identify under this label.

Asexual Flag

A term used by people who do not feel sexual attraction to others (Note: Sexual attraction and Romantic attraction is not the same). Colors represent, in order of display, asexuality, the grey-area between, sexuality, and community.

Pansexual Flag

A term used to define attraction to people of all gender identities without preference. Colors represent attraction to all genders. Each color represents the following: Pink for femininity, Yellow for gender non-conforming, and Blue for masculinity.

Ally Flag - How to be a good ally

Allies have a powerful voice in the LGBTQ+ movement. They understand, and help others understand, the importance of equality, fairness, acceptance and mutual respect.

  • Research what different gender and sexualities there are and what they mean.

  • Listen to the LGBTQ+ people in your life.

  • Understand the privileges you have, and fight for equality.

  • Own up to your mistakes and wrong doings to the LGBTQ+ community.

  • Amplify voices of the oppressed before you amplify your own.
