What are the warning signs of suicide?

It’s important to be aware of warning signs so you can recognize when you need to take action. If someone is exhibiting these signs, especially if the behavior is new or worsening, seek help.

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline lists the following as warning signs to look out for. Which signs are new to you?

  1. Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves

  2. Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live

  3. Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain

  4. Talking about being a burden to others

  5. Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge

  6. Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly

  7. Extreme mood swings

  8. Sleeping too little or too much

  9. Withdrawing or isolating themselves

  10. Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs

  11. Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
